What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs like Annandale Toastmasters Club.

What’s in It for You?

Members learn communication and leadership skills in a supportive, learning lab environment. Toastmasters is a safe place to learn the skills that make a good communicator, practice and master these skills, experiment between different techniques, fail without consequences, and discover what works best for you.

Members want you to be successful. Through evaluations, your fellow members will share what you are doing well, where you can improve, and offer suggestions that could lead to improvements.

How Does It Work?

This video shows what to expect in a typical Toastmasters meeting.

Notice how they transfer control of the lectern by shaking hands! Count how many times people shake each others’ hands. At Toastmasters, you learn the reasons for maintaining control of the lectern, how to deftly pass control, and enough practice that it becomes instinctive.

Toastmasters Education Program

Members follow Toastmasters education program Pathways that teaches the communication skills you need to become an effective speaker. The Annandale Toastmasters Club provides the environment where members practice learned skills to develop competence, which leads to confidence and reduces anxieties from public speaking. Meetings commonly include three activities:

Prepared Speeches
Members working on Pathways projects deliver prepared speeches written and practiced in advance of meetings.
Impromptu Speeches
Table Topics are impromptu speeches on an unknown topic. Members that don’t already have a speaking role participate in Table Topics so that all members have an opportunity to speak at every meeting. Guests are also invited but not required to participate.
Evaluations
Prepared speakers are assigned an evaluator who provides oral and written evaluations. Evaluators identify what a speaker did well, what could be improved, and provide recommendations for improvement.

Mentors

Every member is also assigned a mentor from Annandale Toastmasters Club’s seasoned members. Your mentor is available to answer questions, assist with your speech preparations, and provide feedback.
